My girlfriend Leanne and I were bored last night and decided to take a trip out to the lagoon beach here in Hay River.
It turned out to be really neat because the weather was nice and there was lots of driftwood – ranging in size from tiny to massive, as you’ll see from the photos - all around.

Oh yeah, these pics were all taken with my brand spankin’ new Nikon D300.

My co-reporter, Patrick Teskey, needed me to do some portraits of him for his university’s magazine – they’re doing an feature on grads in the media.
We took a photo in front of the town inukshuk just as the sun was setting, so the light looked really nice. However, when we sent them the photo they said ‘great light, but we want you to reshoot it so that the inukshuk is smaller in the frame and he’s bigger. Go figure. The second shot, while still good, didn’t have the same light as this one did.

Teskey’s also a volunteer firefighter now, so the magazine was also interested in a shot to do with that. We were taking some shots of him standing on the side of the pumper truck in the garage. The problem was that it looked like it was in the garage, so they weren’t all that exciting. Eventually, I started doing to old pop-and-drag with flash/one-tenth exposure to put some artificial motion and action in it (and make the garage part less noticeable).

While Christmas shopping I bought myself a 17.5 million candlepower portable spotlight. So I took it out in -30 degree weather for some light painting. Didn’t get too many frames before the camera gave up on me, but there’ll be more to come.

My home, the Mackenzie Place High Rise in Hay River. My apartment is on the 15th floor on the other side.
I’ve been telling people it’s the tallest building in the whole territory, but I recently found out it’s actually the 2nd tallest.

Never seen one of these before. It was a pretty cool sight.

Not much to say about this one. Was down at the waterfalls and thought the trees looked interesting.

Sean Percy — my editor — looks out across a pit that was used by the Caminco zine mine at Pine Point. The mine closed 20 years ago, but a new company, Tamerlane, is looking to build a new underground mine on the same property.
Stay tuned for a future series on the ghost town left behind: Pine Point.
